Education

Arte Flamenco de San José offers flamenco dance classes for children, taught by artistic director Diana Alejandre and assistant teacher Concha Garcia.

Ms. Alejandre began her first children's class in September 2000. Acknowledging that children have a variety of learning styles, Ms. Alejandre presents new material in many different ways. She breaks complicated skills, such as learning castanets, into small manageable pieces.

The children's first recital was in June 2001. This program continues to evolve and now includes three levels of children's classes. They performed at the San José Museum of Art in July 2002 and have participated in the Arts Express Lecture/Demonstration and Family Lunadas at the Children's Discovery Museum. They had their sixth recital in May 2006.

Committed to in-school programs on flamenco dance and Andalusian culture, Arte Flamenco de San José has participated in the after-school programs at McKinley Elementary School, Sherman Oaks Elementary School, and Hellyer Elementary School under the CORAL project since 2004. Flamenco classes are taught to the first through fifth grades. At the end of the semester, the children perform for their parents, school staff, and peers at a school assembly.
