What is flamenco?
Flamenco is an art form that encompasses three areas: guitar, song, and dance. Flamenco originated in southern Spain, in the region of Andalucia. It is believed that flamenco originated with gypsies, who migrated to Spain from India via Egypt, and who were persecuted in Spanish society. Over the years, flamenco was infused with influences from other persecuted cultures, including Arabs who had lived in Spain for centuries but who became unwelcome in the years since their rulers were conquered and forced from Spain. The result is an ever evolving fusion of passionate music and dance.
About Arte Flamenco de San José
Since its foundation in 1992, Arte Flamenco de San José has been committed to promoting and teaching flamenco dance and the art of flamenco in all its forms. As a non-profit organization, Arte Flamenco de San José provides an opportunity for student dancers, semi-professionals, and professionals to exhibit their talents.
Arte Flamenco programs have included world-renowned flamenco masters, such as José Galván, José Greco II, and Concha Vargas. The calendar of performances also features a local corps of professional dancers and students. Arte Flamenco has been a part of the San José Performing Arts Series, San José Stage Theater, Montgomery Theater, San José Repertory Theater, and Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
Arte Flamenco is dedicated to providing instruction to seasoned students, as well as fledgling dancers. Arte Flamenco provides summer workshops for serious flamenco dancers. In September 2000, Arte Flamenco began offering children's classes. The children's first recital was in June 2001. They performed at the San José Museum of Art in July 2002 and have participated in the Arts Express Lecture/Demonstration and Family Lunadas at the Children's Discovery Museum. Arte Flamenco also conducts programs on flamenco dance and Andalusian culture at several local elementary schools.
